COURSE PURPOSE: This course is designed to equip learners with the knowledge, skills and competencies needed in screening and helping exceptional children in adjustment to learning environments.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION: As a teacher, how does my attitude towards and knowledge of children with special needs impact what I will do as a teacher?
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:At the end of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Identify the history, challenges, current services available to student with disabilities, and emerging special education trends for the future in Kenya
- Describe each of the major categories of exceptionality in terms of definition, etiology, characteristics, and typical educational needs
- Discuss the roles of educators, family, and various service providers in meeting the needs of students with disabilities
- Identify high tech and low tech options for meeting the challenges of individuals with disabilities from birth through the adult years.
- Describe environmental and social factors impacting exceptional children
- Design learning activities utilizing a variety of strategies for differentiation to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
- Outline assessment procedures for screening and monitoring the progress of students with disabilities.
