This course seeks to introduce Diploma students
to the study of Political Science, It examines the meaning of politics and
political science,
theories of political science; methods of political science; nationalism and
the modern state; justice, politics and the state; political preferences and
behaviour; political parties and electoral systems; institutions of governance
(presidents, parliament, coalitions, single party government etc.); federalism
and independent institutions; democracy; authoritarianism; developmental
states; liberalism and capitalism; public policy; political participation;
authoritarian and liberal states; international politics; decolonization and post-colonial Africa;
Neo-colonialism;
impact of political behaviour and institutions on public policy outcomes
(economic performance and public spending, immigration, environmental
protection.
