Course Purpose:
This course focuses on issues pertaining to economic development among developing nations of the world in general and Africa in particular. A critical evaluation of the development situation in these countries as well as the main obstacles to development will be a major area of emphasis. The analysis of the major theories of development and underdevelopment that explain the underdevelopment scenario within these states will be undertaken.
Expected Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the semester, the learners should be able to:
1. Describe the bottlenecks to development of developing economies.
2. Examine the salient socio-eco features of developed and underdeveloped countries.
3. Analyse the various theories of economic development in the contemporary set- up.
4. Articulate the role of birth control measures in economic emancipation.
5. Evaluate the role of capital accumulation in economic growth and development.
6. Appraise the role of value addition in economic development.
7. Corroborate the various strategies that the governments of developing countries are adopting towards the realization of their economic development agenda.
